Study on reactive power coordinated control in double-infeed HVDC system

Traditionally, complex auxiliary tractive power control are usually used in LCCHVDC, such as Gamma-Kick and QPC, to improve system reactive power balance, by adjusting the operating parameters, include fire-angle and DC-voltage, but operating performance will be ignored. MMC-HVDC has the flexible reactive power control capability while delivering DC-power. Therefore, in hybrid double-fed HVDC system, the auxiliary reactive power control of LCC-HVDC can be completely replaced by flexible reactive power control of MMC-HVDC. Research on LUXI asynchronous interconnection project of Southern Power Grid is done, reactive power coordinate of MMC-HVDC replacing the auxiliary reactive power control in LCC-HVDC is verified to be practical. Further more, results of PSCAD/EMTDC simulation proved the flexible reactive power coordination function of MMC-HVDC can significantly shorten time of the commutation failure in LCC-HVDC, avoiding the shutting caused by long-time commutation failure in LCC-HVDC.
